Just recently I stumbled across the work of Kate Pugsley and liked it right away. Kate is an illustrator, painter and surface designer based in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in a small town in Ohio and studied illustration and fine art at the Rhode Island School of Design. In her work she enjoys creating a narrative that is often both specific and ambiguous. Small things, like glimpsing an interesting color combination on the street or simply seeing something out of the ordinary inspires her to make art. Kate’s favorite mediums are oil paints, watercolors, gouache and cut paper and she calls herself a fan of Iris Murdoch books, vintage postage stamps, knitting and coincidences. Prints and paintings are available for sale through her Shop, Etsy and Sebastian Foster Gallery. If you like to know more about Kate Pugsley, I found a nice interview with her here.

When I think back, I can’t remember much deliberation about what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to be drawing and painting all the time, but I was naive and had no idea how to get there. I thought I would study painting, but I picked illustration as my major because the classes sounded more compelling. I loved illustration, but worked in oil paint back then and thought that it as a career would never work for me. After several years of few unsatisfying jobs I realized that I really wanted to be doing illustration. Now, a mix of illustration jobs with plenty of time for personal work makes me the happiest.
