We are in the middle of summer and during the last days it was getting unusually warm here in Germany. We had around 100 degrees for a couple of days, but I didn’t complain! I was just happy that finally the sun was shining all day long. Perhaps it was the weather that inspired me to make this summer wishlist. I found those round towels on the lovely blog Cocorrina by the Greece designer Corina Nika. I liked them right…
GT Sectra is a contemporary serif typeface released by Grilli Type in 2014. What makes this typeface so special: It combines the calligraphic influence of the broad nib pen with the sharpness of the scalpel knife. The eye-catching cuts also inspired the typefaces name! Sectra is derived from the Latin word for cutting, “Secare”. (Harry Potter fans side note: Yes, this is also where the curse Sectumsempra got its name from!) (picture above by Grilli Type) GREAT FOR USAGE IN…
POLPO Venetian Cookbook is one of my current favorites. It has the total package: Refined design, delicious recipes, beautiful photography and interesting background information. Also Toni and I are planning to visit Venice during our stay in Italy this August and this book is perfect to bridge the long waiting time. “POLPO: A Venetian Cookbook (Of Sorts)” is by Russel Norman, a restaurateur who is running several restaurants in London. The first Polpo restaurant opened on Beak Street in Soho…
Today I will keep it very simple with my wishlist: I show you some of my desired minimalistic ceramic vases. They all are pretty minimal, but each of them has subtle details that makes it very special and unique. Ceramicist Lilith Rockett shapes all of her work by hand. This makes her ceramics very special to me, because no two pieces will be identical. At first glance they look simply very minimalistic, but when you look twice you discover little…
Another great typeface I had the chance to work with recently is Superior Title by MCKL. MCKL is a Minneapolis-based type foundry and design studio run by Jeremy Mickel. They offer a library of retail fonts, as well as providing custom typefaces, lettering, and logos, for corporate, publishing and design industry clients. Superior Title is a high contrast Transitional typeface, a kind of missing link between Bodoni and Times. The family takes inspiration from naïve American titling faces from the…
The artwork and paper goods by Kristina Krogh are truly something special, so of course I needed to share her work with you! Kristina is a Danish graphic designer and artist who lives in Copenhagen. She studied at the Graphic Arts Institute of Denmark in 2011 and owns her own online shop today. Her works captivate the viewer due to the unexpected combinations of different materials like marble, ply, wood, cork or paper. She mixes surfaces that are cold, warm,…
At the weekend I was wearing a skirt without tights for the first time this year. This means: Summer is around the corner! Toni and I planted some new flowers and herbs on our balcony already, but as soon as the warm season comes I also love to buy new plants for our apartment. So here are a few recommendations about how to display plants at home. Recently I came across the blog monsterscircus by Mette. You can find a…
Today I’d like to introduce you to my new column “Typefaces”. Choosing the right typefaces for a branding or editorial project is one of my favorite parts. It’s probably also the most difficult, which only makes it more interesting. Over the years I found a lot of great foundries with excellent typefaces and I would really love to share all my favorites with you! This first post is about SangBleu, a set of fonts by Swiss Typefaces. The designers Maxime…
I love type and I love birds. Seriously, Toni and I have a couple of bird prints and even an old engraving. Actually we have decided not to get anymore so soon. But then, last week, Jessica Hische tweeted that she is selling a letterpress series called Alphabirds and I was sold. *oups* Each print is available in three colors: A warm pink, pastel teal, and a lovely sunny yellow. So you can mix and match them just how you…
In Dresden we went to a super interesting exhibition named Supermarket of the Dead. (Now that’s a title for an art exhibition, right?) In China, one of the oldest Chinese folk traditions is to burn paper replicas of money and goods as offerings to win the favour of ancestors, gods and spirits. It’s an ancient practice, dating back to 700AD, but paradoxically more alive than ever. Over the past several years, the traditional offerings have been replaced by burnable paper…
